I would go for Phil's' book ,In search of the sound. Lots of Juicy details on the early life of the Dead.

Yes, I've read Phil's book and there is a lot of good stuff about the earlier days. Actually that's probably where I got most of the info about that period that's still rolling around in my head. Steve's book (Home before Daylight?) was pretty good too.
